Newborn photography is a popular way to capture the beauty and freshness of a newborn baby. But what age is the best time to photograph a newborn?
In my personal experince, the best time to photograph a newborn is within the first three weeks of life. At this age, babies are still very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to pose them and capture those adorable curled-up newborn poses. Additionally, during the first three weeks, babies tend to have that characteristic newborn “look” with bright red skin, defined facial features, and sometime a full head of hair. Personally, I like to schedule newborn session as soon as possible within a week or two after both of you are discharged from the hospital.
After the first two weeks, babies become more alert and less willing to sleep, which can make some posing more difficult. As they grow and develop, they will also start to lose that newborn look and begin to look more like older infants. If you prefer to have more naked posed photos of your baby, I would encourage you to schedule your session sooner than later.
That being said, there is no “wrong” time to photograph a newborn. Every baby is different, and some babies may be more photogenic at certain ages than others. It’s always a good idea to discuss your newborn photography session with your photographer and figure out the best time for your specific newborn. That is why I find it extremely important to have a consultation prior to your session, either on the phone or in person. I think during an person consultation you can get a better feeling of what you can expect during and after the photo session. And while you are at my studio, you will be able take a look and make your prop selection, including hats and/or headbands, outfits so I can help your vision come to life.
Regardless of when you choose to photograph your newborn, the most important thing is to capture the love and joy that a new baby brings to your family. With the right photographer and a little bit of patience, you can create beautiful and timeless images of your newborn that you will cherish for a lifetime.
